The Coaches

David Peden Head Coach
David Peden graduated from Brentwood Academy in Nashville in 1997. He played under Coach Carlton Flatt as a lineman and helped the Eagles win state titles in 1995 and ’96. He attended college at the University of Mississippi, playing for several SEC coaches such as Tommy Tuberville and David Cutcliffe. While at Ole Miss, Peden earned All-SEC Honor Roll accolades. He completed graduate studies in 2007 with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.
After a two-year run as an assistant women’s basketball coach at UT-Martin, Peden returned to Brentwood Academy in 2003 as an assistant football coach. He worked with linemen and linebackers and helped the Eagles to 5 Division II - AAA state championship appearances, with a state title win in 2006. He also helped coach both the men’s and women’s basketball teams while teaching history and economics.
Coach Peden lives in Nashville.

Alex Roberts

Alex Roberts is entering his second season with the Cougars, adding to an already extensive career as both a player and coach. He played his college football at Harding University, winning an Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference championship in 1989. He began his coaching career in 1994 at Jonesboro High in Georgia, and in 2004 moved to Tennessee to become the head football coach at Ezell-Harding.
After a brief stop at Riverdale in 07-08, Coach Roberts joined the staff of Philip Shadowens at MTCS. In 2009 he will run David Peden’s offense and coach linebackers. In the spring he will head up the Cougar baseball team, where they hope to repeat their state playoff run.
Coach Roberts lives in Smyrna with his wife, Jennifer, and their 3 sons Britt, Jordan, and Logan.

Steve Williams Assistant Coach

Steve Williams’ coaching career spans more than 2 decades and across 2 states. Beginning in Florida and moving to Tennessee, Williams made stops at several mid-state schools, including Smyrna (where he coached under Philip Shadowens), Hillsboro, Overton, and Lavergne. He was a member of two region championship teams, at Smyrna in 1995 and again at Hillsboro in 2000.
Coach Williams will be the defensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Cougars, while keeping his jobs as instructor and head baseball coach at Lavergne. When asked about his decision to split his time between the two schools, Williams said that it was Coach Peden’s ideals and principal Todd Miller, “two class acts,” that got him to commit to MTCS for ’09.
Williams lives in Murfreesboro with his wife, Cindi, and their 4 children Ryan, Olivia, Stephanie, and Chris.

Andrew Park Assistant Coach

Coach Park was born and raised in Memphis, attending Harding Academy from 2000-2004 where he was a 4-year letter winner in football. He went to the playoffs all four years, and made two state semi-final game appearances. Moving to Nashville to attend David Lipscomb University, he is a fifth-year Education major.
He started his coaching career with the Cougars in 2006, and has helped with offensive and defensive lines and tight ends. He hopes to continue his coaching career at the college and pro levels, and won’t rule out the possibility of becoming an athletic director.
Coach Park says that the opportunity to connect with players, coaches, and families in a Christian environment is the best thing about MTCS football.

Dwayne Beasley Assistant Coach

Coach Dwayne Beasley is entering his 2nd season with the MTCS Cougars as their Running Backs/Strength and Conditioning Coach. He coached for three years prior to coming to MTCS including being on Phillip Shadowens' staff at Smyrna during their State Championship in 2006. He also was part of Riverdale's 2007 Region Championship team. In his first season with the program, the Cougars did very well by making the playoffs and having their best season ever. Despite the loss of Dillon Wade, Coach Beasley still has plenty of talent in his backfield led by Nathan Coats. Coach Beasley is married to Jacinda Beasley and has two children, Jordan and Jacob. |

Coach Owen Barker is entering his 4th season in coaching with all of them coming at MTCS as the OL/DL coach. The MTSU graduate also was assistant track coach in 2008. |

Brandon O'Neal Assistant Coach

Coach Brandon O'Neal is entering his first season in coaching football and this season with the Cougars he will be leading the wide receivers and defensive backs. He has one year coaching experience at Goodpasture in 2002 with the baseball team and while with them he helped lead them to the district and region championship. Coach O'Neal is married to Lindy O'Neal and has a child Aidan. |
